BILLINGS STOOD BY THE kitchen entrance, amongst the bins and the stray cats who rummaged through them. He’d been waiting for about fifteen minutes when he heard footsteps leave the front door. He popped his head around the corner and saw Kaminsky standing under the awnings.

“Over here,” he whispered.

Kaminsky turned his head. He saw Billings and smiled. “What are you up to, Mr Billings?” he asked, shaking his head as he approached.

“I’m really sorry. There was somebody in that restaurant I simply can’t afford to bump into.”

“So you’re on the run from the police. That’s what you’re doing in Egypt.”

“What?”

“Chief Inspector Flynt and Detective Sergeant Clarkson. They’re staying at my hotel. They’re here on a case, although they are being very tight-lipped about the details. So, what have you done? Robbed a bank?”

“I’m not on the run from the police.”

“Why don’t you want to bump into them, then?”

“It’s a personal matter.”

Kaminsky raised his eyebrows. “A personal matter? My, my! You get more intriguing by the minute.”

“I’m really sorry to have ruined your meal. I’ll make it up to you, I promise.”

“Why don’t you make it up to me now, by coming back to the hotel with me for a drink?”

Billings hesitated.

“Don’t worry about bumping into the police at the hotel. We’ll have drinks in my room.” Kaminsky smiled again, flirtatiously.

“I...um... I’d probably better not.” Billings didn’t sound very convinced.

“Why not?”

“My companions are waiting for me.”

Kaminsky frowned. “What are they? Your children?”

“Some other time, maybe.”

“Very well, then.” Kaminsky looked disappointed. “You might as well have this.” He handed him a paper parcel.

“What is it?” Billings opened it carefully. It contained diced pieces of cooked meat.

“It’s the goat’s meat we ordered. It would’ve gone nicely with the drinks, but I don’t want it now.”

“I don’t want it either.” Billings tried to hand it back, but Kaminsky wouldn’t take it.

“You can give it to your companions. I’m staying at the Hotel Giza, room 326, in case you change your mind.” He tipped his hat and walked away.

Billings realised Kaminsky was walking in the wrong direction. “Isn’t the Hotel Giza the other way?” he called.

“I’m not going back to the hotel.” Kaminsky didn’t even turn his head to look at him. “If you won’t come with me, I shall have to look for company elsewhere.”

Billings knew exactly where he was going. Wagh El Birket– Cairo’s notorious brothel district.

He shuffled slowly back to his hotel, one hand holding the meat parcel, the other in his pocket. He looked at the stones and pebbles in his path, the dust which collected on his shoes, the scarabs that scurried away from him into the gutter.

I should’ve gone with him, he thought. A bit of sensual relief would have done him good. He contemplated going back. He could run up to him and catch him up. But he shook his head. Kaminsky was a cad. His wife probably left him because he kept cheating on her with other men. Kaminsky would only make him feel worse. He didn’t want someone for just a few hours; that would only increase the longing.
